As experienced Migration Agents and Qualified Education Agents, we closely monitor changes to Australia’s student visa and temporary graduate visa policies. The recent updates, effective from 1st July 2024, have significant implications for both new and existing students. Let’s delve into how these changes impact your study journey:

Important Updates to Student and Temporary Graduate Visas from 1st July 2024

The Australian Government has introduced several updates to the Student and Temporary Graduate visas, aiming to strengthen the integrity of the student visa program and provide enhanced pathways for skilled graduates. Here’s a quick overview of what’s new:

  1. Financial Viability Criterion: From 10th May 2024, the financial requirement for Student and Student Guardian visas is set at $29,710 for an individual student. This applies to any visas lodged on or after this date.
  2. TOEFL iBT Revalidated: TOEFL iBT is once again a valid test for student visa purposes and is accepted by all Australian universities. However, tests taken between 26th July 2023 and 4th May 2024 are not valid.
  3. Enhanced Genuine Student Assessment: Replacing the Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement, the new Genuine Student requirement includes a list of targeted questions to better assess applicants.
  4. Language Proficiency Standards: New English language requirements apply to all Student Visa and Temporary Graduate Visa applications from 23rd March 2024.
  5. Post-Study Work Visa Reforms: The length of post-study work visas has been reduced, but graduates can still gain valuable work experience. Those in skilled jobs may be eligible for the new 4-year Skills in Demand visa, offering a pathway to permanent residency. Additionally, the maximum eligible age for Temporary Graduate visa applicants is now 35 years, with exceptions for Masters (research) and PhD graduates under 50 years.
  6. Onshore Student Visa Eligibility Criteria Revised: From 1st July 2024, holders of certain visas, including Visitor and Temporary Graduate visas, can no longer apply for Student visas while in Australia.

These changes reflect our commitment to ensuring a robust student visa system in its international education programs and supporting graduates in achieving their career goals. For personalized advice, consult with a qualified Migration Agent or Education Counselor.
